Dear 012,

What is the story of Bursa, how did it become "Bursa" after "purse"? Could you be more precise? 028 (Antalya) makes a good example of how should you be "purs"uing your homework.

KIRKLARELİ 39
The old names of Kırklareli are Saranta Ecclesia,Kırkkıiıse,Kırkkilise and Kırkazizler.
When Turks conquered Kırklareli in 1368,its name was SARANTA ECCLESIA(from latin)which means in Turkish"yurttaşlar topluluğu".This also means Kırkkilise.Kırkkilise probably comes from the event in which the Emperor Constantin released it and then Roma Emperor accepted it.
In these times, because of it was the first place of Christanity in this area Kırklareli was called as HOLY TOWN.
In 1603 a writer from Polen came and said"As it is a rocky place Greeks call it"Dessera Kondi Eklesiai".
When the Turkish republic was founded, the city's name was changed from Kırkazizler to Kırklareli because of the fact that this name contains some religious meaning.
When we look at the number "40",it is associated with the 40 soldiers who died here. And there is a saying about it,
"Kırk kimse ki şehit oldu bu yerde
Bu nam ile anıldı bu belde"

Edirne (Greek: Ἁδριανούπολις Hadrianoúpolis or Αδριανούπολη Adrianoúpoli, Bulgarian: Одрин) is a city in Thrace, the westernmost part of Turkey, close to the borders with Greece and Bulgaria. The city was known in English until after the First World War as Adrianople (see below, and also List of traditional Greek place names). Edirne is the capital of Edirne Province (Turkish Thrace) and its estimated population in 2002 was 128,400, up from 119,298 in 2000.

The city initially took its name after its Roman (re)founder, and the usage remains current in Greek, though it has fallen into desuetude in English and other languages. The Turks commonly use Edirne (now the official and customary name) or Edreneh, and the Slavs Odrin (for Bulgarian) or Jedrene (for Serbian); all of these are probably adapted forms of the name Hadrian.

The name of a locality called Ti-smurna is mentioned in some of the Level II tablets from the Assyrian colony in Kültepe, with the prefix ti- identifying a proper name, although it is not established with certainty that this name refers to İzmir. Some would see in the city's name a reference to the name of an Amazon called Smirna.

The oldest rendering in Greek of the city's name we know is the Aeolic Greek Μύῥρα Mýrrha, corresponding to the later Ionian and Attic Σμύρνη Smýrnē, both presumably descendants of a Proto-Greek form Smúrnā. It would be linked to the name of the Myrrha commifera shrub, also known as the dindin tree, a plant that produces the aromatic resin called myrrh and is indigenous to the Middle East and northeastern Africa. The Romans took this name over as Smyrna which is the name used in English for the pre-Turkish periods. The name İzmir is the Turkish version of the same name.

59---Tekirdağ's historical names include Rodosto (Ρωδόστο) or Rhaedestos (Ραιδεστός) and during the Byzantine era, it was also called Bisanthi (Βισάνθη). During the Ottoman era, it was called Tekfur Dağ, which means "yellow mountain", based on the Turkish word tekfur (deriving from the Armenian tagovar, one who wears the crown') which designates Christian sovereigns[citation needed]. In time the name mutated into the Turkish Tekirdağ, and this became the official name under the Turkish Republic

ZONGULDAK))The city's name probably comes from Zone Göl Dag, the name given to the area by French mining companies.[1]

Following information about Ereğli coal mining history, will help us to understand Zonguldak name is originated from Zone-Goul-Dagh in French: (In catholic encyclopedia, with reference of year 1908, Zonguldak town is called as Zoungoul-Dagh or in Turkish, Zoungoul mountain; or with Turkish+French meaning, Lake/Göl mountain zone... Goul-Dagh is a mountain on the south of Zonguldak town, with a little lake... It was a reference benchmark for the new mining zone and sea port location in Eregli region after 1860s.)

Another etymology is that the name originates from the Turkish zongalık or zongura.

Or it may have arisen from the name of the nearby ancient settlement of Sandraka or Sandrake.

According to another theory the name may have come from a compound word, namely Jungle-Dag, from jungle which the French entrepreneurs named due to uneven and wooded geography of the land, and dag meaning "a mountain" in Turkish.

GÜMÜŞHANE- The name literally means "silver town" and is derived from the silver (Turkish: gümüş) mines nearby. Its name is a direct translation of the ancient Greek name of the city, Argyroupoli (Argyro=silver) and Polis (city). As such, the city carries the same value-laden place name as other illustrious counterparts as Argentina, Argenteuil and Srebrenica.

The name Karaman comes from the house of Karaman.
Alladdin Keykubat I, the sultan of Seljuks from 1219 to 1237, had reached the border of the Byzantine Empire and ordered some from the house of Turkmen to keep the borders safe. No sooner had he done so than Cilicia was captured, and control of the city was given to the house of Karaman. At that time, the house was led by Nûre Sûfî, son of Sadeddin. After his death, Karaman Bey took over control of the house.
You know him
So that is the story.

05_AMASYA_AMASEİA

It is known that each old city has its own founder deity or hero. So this knowledge is acceptable for “Amaseia/Amasya”
The word of Ameseia is related to ‘Mâ’ which means Chief Deity. So Ameseia means “ Chief Deity Mâ ’ s City. (After Persians conquered Anatolia, believing to ‘deity Mâ’ became widespread.)

Amasya (Amáseia)
According to Strabo,a geographer, the name Amasya comes from Amasis the queen of the Amazons, who were said to have lived here. The name has changed little throughout history, Αμάσεια, Amaseia, Amassia and Amasia all being found in Greek and Roman coinage. Following the arrival of the Turks the name mutated to Amasya.

DİYARBAKIR

the Romans colonized the city and named it Amida. During the Roman rule, the first city walls were constructed (297 AD) and later, the greater walls were built as per the command of the Roman emperor Caonstantanius-2. After the Romans, the Persians came to power and were succeeded by the Muslim Arabs. It was the leader of the Arab Bekr tribe, Bekr Bin Vail, who named the city Diyar Bakr, meaning – the country of “Bakr” i.e. Arabs. Much later, in the Republican era the city got its current name Diyarbakir, which was derived from the Copper ore that exists here.

GIRESUN!!!
The English word cherry, French cerise, Spanish cereza, and Southern Italian dialect cerasa (standard Italian ciliegia) all come from Classical Greek κέρασος 'cherry', which has been identified with Giresun's ancient name of Cerasus. The cherry was first exported to Europe from Cerasus in Roman times. The town was also known as Kerasunt during the medieval period and, under that name, was the second city of the Empire of Trebizond.

Giresun < Kerason < Kerasounta < Kerasus "horn" (for peninsula) in Greek + ounta "Greek toponomical suffix".

Then all the people, even the disabled ones rushed to the lake to drink from it but when they reached to the area, instead of one eternal lake they found a thousand lakes. They could never find the eternal water. After that event they named this are "bingöl" reminding thousand lakes...

01 ADANA
The name of the city is believed to have come from a legend that Adanus and Sarus, two sons of Uranus, came to a place near the Seyhan River where they built Adana.

Alternatively, it is believed that Adad (Tesup), the name of the Hittite Thunder God that lived in the forest was given to the region. The Hittites ideas, names and writings have been found in the area so this is a strong possibility. The theory goes that since the Thunder God brought so much rain and this rain in turn brought such great abundance in this particular region, this god was loved and respected by its inhabitants and, in his honor, the region was called the 'Uru Adaniyya'; in other words 'The Region of Ada'.

Adana's name has had many different versions over the centuries: Adanos, Ta Adana, Uru Adaniya, Erdene, Edene, Ezene, Batana, Atana, Azana.

Süryaniler’in elde mevcut el yazma kaynaklarında da bunlara yakın söylemler mevcuttur.

It is not clearly known when the city was founded under what name. Byzantines called it "Σαράντα Εκκλησιές" and in the XIV Century, this was translated to Turkish and called "Forty Churches" (Kırk Kilise). ISTANBUL(Turkish: İstanbul, Greek: Κωνσταντινούπολη, historically Byzantium and later Constantinople; see other names) is Turkey's most populous city, and its cultural and financial center. The city covers 25 districts of the Istanbul province. It is located at 41° N 29° E, on the Bosphorus strait, and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two continents. In its long history, Istanbul (Constantinople) served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330-395), the Byzantine Empire (395-1204 and 1261-1453), the Latin Empire (1204-1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. The "Historic Areas of Istanbul" were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.

TRABZON, formerly known as Trebizond (Greek: Τραπεζοῦς Trapezoûs or Τραπεζούντα Trapezoúnta), is a city on the Black Sea coast of northeastern Turkey and the capital of Trabzon Province. Throughout history Trabzon has been an important meeting point for international trade and cultural exchange due to its strategic location which controls the east-west (Asia-Europe) and north-south (Russia-Middle East) trading routes. Trabzon formed the basis of several states in its long history, and was the capital city of the Empire of Trebizond. The population of the city is 275,137 (2006 census).

ANTALYA (formerly known as Adalia; from Pamphylian Greek: Αττάλεια Attália) is a large town and tourist destination, situated on the Mediterranean coast of southwestern Turkey. It is the capital city of Antalya Province. The population of the city is 603,190 (2000 census) but reaches up to two million in summers at the height of tourism season.
Situated on a steep cliff over the Mediterranean, Antalya is a picturesque city surrounded by mountains. Developments in tourism, starting in the 1970s, have transformed the city into an international resort. With its airport and central location, Antalya is "the capital of Turkish tourism", a gateway for the Turkish riviera and many historical sites. Furthermore, with its palm-lined boulevards, its prize-winning marina, the unspoilt historical neighbourhood of Kaleiçi, and the modern developments along the coast, the city of Antalya is a major attraction in its own right.
Antalya has plenty of accommodation, a very hot climate and many places to visit both in and around the city, including traces of Pamphylian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman architecture and cultures.

48 MUĞLA
The original name of Muğla is open for discussion. Various sources refer to the city as Mogola, Mobella or Mobolia
In 1390, Muğla was taken over by the Ottoman Empire. However, just twelve years later, Tamerlane and his forces defeated the Ottomans in the Battle of Ankara, and returned control of the region to its former rulers, the Menteşe Beys, as he did for other Anatolian Turkish Beyliks. Muğla was brought back under Ottoman control by Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror, in 1451. One of the most important events in the area during the Ottoman period was the well-recorded campaign of Süleyman the Magnificent against Rhodes, which was launched from Marmaris.

With this long history Muğla is rich in ancient ruins, with over 100 excavated sites including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Letoon, near Fethiye

38 KAYSERİ Kayseri is established in B.C.At first it is named "kanisti" later it is changed to"Mazaka"when Asur people live.It is thought that Mazaka comes from Mechus or Mosach who is ancestor of Kapodakya people.Another belief is that Mazak turns into Mazaka in Greek. But it is believed that the name comes from Machus which means zeus in Frig language which is also the most suitable form because there are these expressions on the old coins. In the17century in D.C for a while it is named"Eusebeia"which shows that it is capital of kapadokya Kingdom.Kapodakya king named this city"Kaisareia"in honor of roma empire and it is famed with this name. The current name of the city comes from seventh century after the Arab conquer this city and Kaisareia is read "Kayseri".Since that time it is called Kayseri.3231070025
